LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Legislation pending in the Michigan Senate could bring back two classic Michigan license plate styles to help fund road and bridge repairs.

Sen. Mallory McMorrow (D-Royal Oak) says the bill she’s sponsoring would create a “unique way for drivers to accessorize their car, celebrate our car culture, and help us fix our roads by generating potentially millions of dollars of additional revenue without raising taxes.”

One of the classic designs that might return is the blue “Great Lakes” plate issued from 1983-2007. The other is the black “Great Lakes State” plate that was discontinued in 1983.

Retro plates are currently projected to cost $100. McMorrow says she’s willing to negotiate the price, but added that she believes constituents already view the plates as a hot commodity.

“I’ve had countless conversations with car enthusiasts over the past few years who saw this bill in the news and want to know, more than anything else we’re working on: ‘When can I get the blue plate?” she said.
