ST. IGNACE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – If you find a message in a bottle on one of the Great Lakes, you could be in for a treat — including a multi-night stay in the U.S.’s only red and white candy cane lighthouse.
The White Shoal Lighthouse Historical Preservation Society is holding the giveaway as part of the lighthouse’s 113th anniversary celebration. The contest pays tribute to longtime lighthouse keeper George Keller, who threw a bottle message into the water in case he did not survive the Armistice Day Blizzard of 1940.

“We made the connection with bringing these four family members together that it would be really cool to commemorate that story,” Jill Ore, head lighthouse keeper for White Shoal, told MLive.
Each giveaway bottle contains a message written by one of Keller’s descendants. Prizes range from a 3-night stay in the lighthouse for 1 person to the same stay for 5 people, occupying both bedrooms.
Four bottles were dropped into the Mackinac Straits, which connect Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, on September 4. Prizes don’t expire and will be honored when the bottles are found.
