Whitmer originally declared a state of emergency for Monroe and Wayne counties on Friday, August 25, the day after the storms ripped through the state, leaving hundreds of thousands of Michiganders without power and leveling homes and businesses. Eaton, Ingham and Livingston counties, along with the city of South Lyon in Oakland County were later added to the declaration on Monday, August 28.

The move from Whitmer’s office comes one day after Kent County officials declared a local state of emergency to help with cleanup. The local declaration triggers a potential response from the state and federal level. The local state of emergency will remain in effect for seven days.
