EAGLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Organizers who want to stop the Eagle Township Megasite in Clinton County have told Michigan News Source that they have collected more than 500 signatures on their petition to recall Eagle Township Supervisor Patti Schafer over her handling of the development. 412 signatures are needed to put the measure on the ballot for the November’s election.

The petition language was submitted by Eagle Twp. Resident Troy Stroud and it says “In the spring of 2022, Eagle Township Supervisor Patti Schafer signed a non-disclosure agreement pertaining to the potential large-scale development of land in Eagle Township. This act limited the information available in Eagle Township residents affected by the potential development.”

The megasite, which is also referred to as the “Michigan Manufacturing Innovation Campus” (MMIC) is an unknown development that the state is pushing to be a possible semiconductor or battery plant on 1,200+ acres of land, the majority of which is reported to be owned by Michigan State University through a donation.

Stroud said that an attorney will look over the signatures and other requirements needed before they turn them in to Clinton County for review which will most likely be on Monday morning.

The signatures were obtained by setting up a stationary site on multiple days in a local parking lot next to a convenience store and also by going door-to-door.

Because the signatures on the petition have to be from residents of Eagle Township in order to be valid, the organizers of the petition got a list of voters in the township and also asked those who signed the petition to present ID to prove that they lived in the township. These things were done so that the signatures wouldn’t be disqualified under review.

Schafer currently has an appeal in process to fight the recall and Stroud said that a decision on her appeal is supposed to be rendered on July 19th.

According to Stroud, Eagle Township residents were quite eager to add their names to the petition. He said “Everyone’s excited to sign” and pointed out that they only ran across about four people who didn’t want to sign the petition.
