LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Those endeavoring to add some spice to their food or just color to their plate, may find it more challenging to find the popular Sriracha Chili Sauce as shortages continue.

While the shortage of some of the raw materials needed to make the red hot sauce contained by similarly vibrant green capped bottles is not new, the company, Huy Fong Sriracha, has admitted that the shortages continue.
Generally, the condiment sells for between $5 to $10 per bottle, but in light of the limited supply, a vast array of third party sellers including those on Amazon, eBay, and Walmart are seeking a richer sum. Fortune has recorded bottles selling for between $20 up to $150.
“Because we do not sell directly to retail/market levels, we cannot determine when the product will hit shelves again and/or who currently has the product in stock,” Huy Fong said in a statement. “We are grateful for your continued patience and understanding during this unprecedented inventory shortage.”
Some theories about the shortage hold a lack of the red pepper base responsible.
“The main culprit here is a shortage of their primary ingredient, the red jalapeño chile pepper,” said David Ortega, a food economist and associate professor at Michigan State University. “And that’s due to climate change and the mega drought.”
Amidst differing ideas about why the company has struggled to not only source sufficient peppers, due to climate, drought, or other factors, other hot sauce companies have stepped up to try and fill the hole in the market by offering alternatives.

Another well known hot sauce company, Tabasco, has created an opportunity for itself and other customers to find its version of Sriracha.
“Our premium sriracha sauce is rich, bold, and perfect for any meal. In one bite, you’ll have sweet and savory notes of red jalapeño peppers with a smooth garlic finish,” the company said on the store finder page. “Drizzle our sriracha sauce on any main dish, side or mix with melted butter for a Sriracha glaze.”
Previously, the Huy Fong Inc. company told customers in an email from earlier this year not to expect orders submitted after April 19, until after Labor Day.
“Unfortunately, this is out of our control and without this essential ingredient we are unable to produce any of our products,” the company said.
During the lack of the specific Sriracha sauce, it’s wise for customers to savor what they have saved of it and embrace the delays for the sauce, or seek other options if they want to avoid price hikes.
