LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan Democrat Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson told CNN on Wednesday that she has been interviewed by federal prosecutors in their investigation concerning the 2020 election probe. She spoke to CNN’s Kaitlin Collins on “The Source” and said that she was interviewed in March for several hours by Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has been investigating former President Donald Trump concerning his possible involvement in an alleged attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The investigation includes a focus on the events of January 6, 2021, which many say were motivated by Trump, and also includes fake elector schemes that were allegedly organized by allies of Trump. This investigation is an outcome of the work of the January 6 committee, who determined that Trump was at the center of the effort to overturn the election and asked the Justice Department to criminally charge him.

As a result, Attorney General Merrick Garland asked Smith to determine “whether any person or entity unlawfully interfered with the transfer of power following the 2020 presidential election.”
Benson was unable to discuss specific details about the interview with CNN but she disclosed that they were focused on “the impact of the misinformation on our lives and the threats that emerged from various sources.”
She went on to say, “Myself and the election officials who have – at request or simply because we have a story tell – have been speaking to authorities, I think it’s really a reflection of our desire to ensure that the law is followed, and where there’s evidence of wrongdoing, there’s justice that is served.”
If called to testify in front of a grand jury, Benson said she’s “willing to speak to anyone” about what “we endured.” When discussing the interview, she didn’t divulge if she was asked about former President Trump or if Jack Smith was in the room while she was being questioned.
Benson said, “It’s tricky, because these are ongoing investigations, and none of us want to compromise the very seriousness with which this effort is proceeding. But I think it’s important for the American public to know that what occurred in 2020 was really detrimental to who we are as Americans, and it’s important that there be justice and accountability for what occurred.”
Benson added, “I have confidence that our federal prosecutors are looking carefully at the law without bias or favor and ensuring that the law is enforced and that there’s accountability where violations occurred.”

In a related matter, sources report that Jack Smith’s team has also been interviewing Michigan officials, examining those who administered the 2020 vote and the unsuccessful plan to give Michigan’s 16 electoral votes to Trump even though he lost the state to Joe Biden. According to the Detroit News, one of the people interviewed was Republican Antrim County Clerk Sheryl Guy who says she was asked to hand over documents during the interview. She was at the center of the events where the county’s initial results incorrectly showed a Joe Biden victory.
