LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – After seven months of serving in Michigan’s House, six lawmakers are receiving a job performance rating from their constituents in the form of recalls.

Five first-term House Democrats and one Republican are facing recall efforts over their votes on gun reform, hate crimes, and confirming legislative leadership.

The following House Democrats have recall petitions that are awaiting approval: Rep. Betsy Coffia (D-Traverse City), Rep. Sharon MacDonell (D-Troy), Rep. Jennifer Conlin (D-Ann Arbor), Rep. Reggie Miller (D-Van Buren Township), and Rep. Jaime Churches (D-Wyandotte).

Rep. Coffia made the following statement on Twitter: “While I respect the recall process as an important tool to hold politicians accountable when they betray the public trust, recall should not be used to disenfranchise thousands of voters in the 103rd District simply because of a policy disagreement.”

Rep. Cam Cavitt (R-Cheboygan) said his pending recall stems from his support of a procedural vote to name Rep. Joe Tate(D-Detroit) as House speaker.

“Lansing Democrats just passed a historically bloated budget that prioritizes special projects in their own districts, and will only balance the budget if they raise taxes,” said Rep. Cavitt. “This recall would only help provide them the opportunity to continue abusing their power.”

Michigan’s Board of State Canvassers will meet on August 1 to determine whether the petitions can proceed. If approved, organizers can begin collecting signatures.
