LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has sent the invitation to all those living in Michigan, and those visiting for the “Three Free” Weekend on June 10 and 11.

The event will feature two full days of fishing, boating, and exploring across the more than 100 state parks.

“It’s that time of year when everyone gets to enjoy ‘Three Free’ Weekend and take part in some of Michigan’s best outdoor recreation opportunities,” Acting DNR Director Shannon Lott said.  “Whether you’re an avid outdoors-person or someone just beginning to explore all the options, our ‘Three Free’ Weekend makes it easy to pursue a new passion, visit a new park or introduce friends and family to an outdoor experience or place you love.”

The DNR encourages people to take advantage of fishing all in-season species without a license for the weekend only, and all other fishing regulations apply.  Normally, an annual all species fishing license is required and would cost residents $26, and nonresidents $76.

Similarly, Off Road Vehicles can legally traverse any of the state’s 4,000 miles of state-designated routes and trails without a ORV license or trail permit.

Trail users can do their part for invasive species prevention by removing dirt and debris from shoes, gear and vehicles before heading to the next location according to the DNR.

Due to much of Michigan’s high fire warning, some experts also recommend extra precaution if campfires are used for cooking or heating purposes.  No burn permits are being issued.

Commander of the DNR Incident Management Team, Mike Janisse, recommended caution for campfires, and reiterated the need to make sure that they are out cold after use by using a combination of water, and shovel or rake to churn the coals until they are completely out.

While free fishing and ORV weekends occur twice a year, the “Three Free” Weekend only takes place in June each year.

Those who participate in any of the various outdoor activities are encouraged to share about their experiences to #RecreateResponsibly.
