DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – It is the 90th season for the Detroit Lions and they are celebrating a way in representing the past. The 2023 season will bring an alternate look as the Lions have unveiled an alternate helmet representing the past, present, and future.

Vice President of Marketing and Brand Emily Griffin says, “We looked at shells for a couple of weeks, the metallic and matte shells, but knowing we were going to wear this on the field during our 90th season, with the essence of our 90th season campaign really celebrating the past, present, and future, merging them together, not wanting to put all of our focus on history at this pivotal, exciting time for the club, this just felt right. It’s something we’ve never done with something that’s classic. It met the theme.”

The helmet will be blue paying homage to the classic logo from the 1960s and will feature a gray matte facemask. It will be a new color for the NFL as the shade of blue on the helmet has never been worn before.

This new look is a spinoff off the famous Ford Mustang emblem with a silver and blue racing stripe behind a slick looking lion. This same logo will be a part of the team’s 90th season jersey patch used throughout the season. The lion will be flipped to face forward on both sides of the helmet as the racing stripes will be unmirrored as the silver stripe will be closest to the front.

It was 1955 that the Lions last wore blue helmets which was two years before they won the team’s last championship.

Detroit will wear the helmets with their all-gray alternate uniforms in two games in 2023. The first will be on October 30 vs. Las Vegas on Monday Night Prime Time with the second game in Week 18 against the Minnesota Vikings.
