LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – “What is the Michigan Republican Party doing?” That’s a good question, and the subject line of a recent email from Michigan GOP Chair Kristina Karamo to supporters.
Karamo announced the launch of a community organizing program called “The Good Neighbor Program.”
“Our goal is that Republican delegates and activists are the most dedicated neighbors,” Karamo wrote, citing the importance of engaging with the community directly. “We know that the media and education system has deceived the public about who we are and what we believe, and Big Tech manipulates the algorithms, to keep us in bubbles, to thwart our efforts of getting our message out.”
A video explaining the goals of “The Good Neighbor Program” can be viewed here.
“We must do the work of political engagement all year long,” Karamo writes. “We will use The Good Neighbor Program’s infrastructure to fight systemic election corruption, which is a top priority of this administration. We want people to be engaged in a manner that will remedy the problem. With the help of the folks at CheckMyVote.org, we will roll out our QVF clean-up program AND focus on the deletion of voter histories.”
The timing of this program might be just the makeover the Michigan Republican Party needs. Previous Michigan GOP chairs Ron Weiser and Meshawn Maddock failed to throw the party’s support behind its gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon. Instead, the public got a front row seat to party in-fighting at its August 2022 convention where, among other things, different primary candidates who lost to Dixon tried to squash her choice for lieutenant governor.
Michigan Republicans lost the governor’s race and gave up control of both chambers in the November 2022 election.
The party elected Karamo as chair in February 2023, where she inherited roughly $400,000 of debt from Weiser and Maddock. She closed down the Lansing office and operates the party out of a P.O. Box in Grand Rapids.
Meanwhile, the Republicans have yet to put up a big-name candidate in the 2024 race for U.S. Senate while the Democrat Party boasts several recognizable, strongly funded candidates. Current Senator Debbie Stabenow is retiring.
