LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – For some low-income Michiganders, they may be eligible for additional money after a multistate settlement with the owner of TurboTax.
“Intuit defrauded hard-working taxpayers for no other purpose than to increase its company’s profits,” Nessel said in a statement. “This settlement should be a warning to all corporations that mislead the public that they will be held accountable for their deception and their professional reputation is likely to suffer.”

Intuit, the owner of TurboTax “tricked” consumers into paying for free tax services according to Nessel, and will begin paying checks to consumers to the tune of $141 million in a multistate settlement. While roughly 4.4 million consumers nationwide will receive checks in the mail, Michigan will obtain more than $3.5 million for 122,000 customers who paid to file their federal tax return.
Consumers who wrongfully paid more than they were supposed to are expected to receive somewhere between $29 and $30 each but the specific amount depends on the number of tax years they qualify for according to Nessel.
The settlement between numerous states and Intuit was first announced by New York Attorney General Letitia James, with assistance from the attorneys general of Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington in May 2022. Every U.S. state and the District of Columbia have signed onto the agreement.
“TurboTax’s predatory and deceptive marketing cheated millions of low-income Americans who were trying to fulfill their legal duties to file their taxes,” said New York AG James in a statement. “Today we are righting that wrong and putting money back into the pockets of hardworking taxpayers who should have never paid to file their taxes. I thank my fellow attorneys general for their partnership in this effort to stand up for ordinary Americans and hold companies who cheat consumers accountable.”
Those seeking to determine eligibility for repayment can check here, some of whom may include Michiganders who paid to file their federal tax returns via TurboTax from 2016 through 2018.
Checks will be mailed through May 2023.
