DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – In the Monday night NHL Draft Lottery, Detroit’s name was drawn for the ninth overall pick. They had the ninth best odds, or 5 percent chance, of selecting the no. 2 overall. This is the seventh straight year that Detroit has owned a top-10 pick in the first round.

Detroit has had the ninth overall pick four times in franchise history. They last picked at ninth in 2017 when they took Michael Rasmussen. In 1978, they took Willie Huber, 1974 it was Bill Lochead, and in 1967 Ron Barkwell was selected.

This year, Detroit will also have the no. 18 pick after a trade with Vancuver on March 1 in exchange for defenseman Filip Hronek and a 2023 fourth-round selection. They also received a 2023 second-round pick in the trade. It is the first time since 2021 that Detroit had two first-round picks.

The NHL Draft will be on June 28-29 in Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.
