DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Eric Haase had the go-ahead hit in the eighth inning as Detroit took game one of the double header against the New York Mets, 6-5. He took a hack at the first pitch singling to centerfield as both Javier Baez and Matt Vierling came in for the one-run lead. The win puts Detroit at 11-17 on the year as they defeated a 16-14 Mets’ team.

Alex Lange came in the top of the ninth recording one strikeout and a walk for his fourth save of the year. Tyler Alexander pitched just 0.1 innings for his first win of the year. He came in the top of the eighth with two outs and a runner on second base. He followed with a fly out to get out of the inning which was good enough for the win as he was on record as Detroit took the lead.

Haase led the team with two hits and five RBI as Baez also had two hits and one RBI with a home run. Haase brought in five the six runs in the game scoring once.

Joey Wentz started the game going six innings allowing five earned runs and two strikeouts. Will Vest followed with 1.2 innings and two strikeouts before Alexander and Lange closed it out.

Haase had a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead. NY had two home runs in the second to pull within one, 3-2. Baez recorded a 434 foot home run in the third pushing the score to 4-2. NY scored three runs in the fifth for a one-run lead, 5-4, before Haase’s single in the eighth.

Detroit is taking on NY in the second game on Wednesday night of the double header.
