LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Eight Michigan GOP lawmakers sent a letter to Ford and urged the automaker to reconsider the decision to discontinue AM radio from future vehicles.

Representatives Neil Friske, Steve Carra, Brian BeGole, Rachelle Smit, Alicia St. Germane, James DeSana, David Prestin, and Greg Markkanen penned the letter.

“Nearly 38 million Americans regularly listen to AM radio, and it is the backbone of the emergency alert system,” the letter said. “That is 28 million customers you are now potentially alienating, and it is in the best interest of both the Ford Motor Company and the State of Michigan that Ford continue to sell as many products as possible.”

Axios reported that Ford isn’t the only automaker looking to turn off the AM signal. BMW, Mazda, Tesla, Volkswagen, and Volvo have eliminated AM radios and claimed “EVs’ electric motors interfere with AM frequencies, creating annoying buzzing noises and faded signals.”

In addition, the lawmakers asked for the reasoning behind Ford’s decision. “If AM goes, will FM be next? Will our constituents then be forced to turn strictly to massive media companies (e.g., Spotify, iTunes, Google, etc.) for entertainment during their drives?”

Rep. Cam Cavitt (R-Cheboygan) says there’s another reason why Ford is looking to tune out AM radio.

“Ford is a top donor to Gov. [Gretchen] Whitmer’s campaign and the Democratic party,” Cavitt told The Steve Gruber Show on Tuesday.” A large percentage of [Conservative] Michiganders get their information from AM talk radio. I don’t know any Democrats that listen to AM radio.”

“Oh trust me,” Gruber quipped. “They listen to this everyday.”
