DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Relief pitching failed to do their job for Detroit in the ninth inning as Toronto scored two runs to force extra innings where they pulled off the 4-3 win. Five pitchers were used in the game after Eduardo Rodriguez gave Detroit six solid innings allowing just one run with three strikeouts as he received the no-decision.

Six different players had a hit each as Kerry Carpenter recorded two RBI on a home run. Nick Maton also added a RBI on a solo home run.

Headed into the bottom of the ninth inning, Detroit lead, 3-1. Trey Wingenter was handed the ball to close down the Blue Jays but did the opposite. The inning started with a single followed by a walk, a wild pitch that sent runners to second and third base, and then hit batter to load the bases. He was relieved by Chasen Shreve that gave up two straight sacrifice fly outs to tie the game at three. He recorded a line out to end the inning but the game was sent into extra innings.

“They trust me to close the thing out, and I kind of let the boys down. That was on me,” said Wingenter.

Starting extra innings with a runner on second base in the international tiebreaking rule, Shreve faced Toronto batter that sacrificed his at-bat moving the runner to third base. Jose Cisnero came in for relief and followed by giving up a single to center field to George Springer ending the game as Shreve was handed the loss.

Wingenter continued with, “They’re a momentum-based team and when one thing goes well, they get the snowball rolling and that’s kind of what happened.”

Maton put Detroit on the board first in the fourth inning with a solo home run to center field that went 408 feet. Toronto tied the game in the bottom of the winning but Carpenter recorded a two-run home run in the seventh inning to right center field for the 3-1 lead. Toronto was kept scoreless for four straight innings before tying the game in the ninth with two runs.

Detroit is now 2-9 and has lost their last six games. They will face Toronto in the third game of the series on Thursday at 6:07 p.m.
