DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Despite a last minute push from the Red Wings to send the game to a shoot tied at six, Buffalo came away the victor in the shootout, 7-6, ending Detroit’s hopes for a playoff spot. David Perron’s slap shot with one-minute left in the game tied the score at six but the Red Wings couldn’t convert in overtime or the shootout.
“This team could have easily – and maybe should have – just quit. They actually went the other way. That’s points in five of our last six and we’re going through playoff teams, teams that are playing for their lives and a couple of the best teams in the league. That’s a credit to the guys and I think it’s very important going into next year,” said head coach Derek Lalonde.

Lucas Raymond made the first shootout goal but then Buffalo’s Jack Quinn tied it in the team’s second attempt as Perron missed his shot. Alex Tuch put Buffalo up, 2-1, on the third attempt slipping it by Ville Husso. The final shot came down to Dylan Larking but his wrist shot was stopped by the Sabres’ Devon Levi as Buffalo earned the win.
It was a fun-filled first period as Buffalo held a 3-2 lead. The Sabres struck first at 4:35 but then Detroit scored twice in five minutes for a 2-1 lead. Austin Czarnik scored at 10:38 and then Larkin put the Red Wings up at 15:05 on a power play. Buffalo then scored at 17:10 and 19:08 for the 3-2 lead.
Buffalo made it 4-2 just over a minute into the second period. Detroit acted quickly, though, scoring two goals in under a minute to tie the game, again. Alex Chiasson had his sixth goal of the game on a power play at 16:04 and then Simon Edvinsson tied the game at 16:52.
The third period brought two goals for each team. Buffalo had two goals in the first five minutes for the 6-4 lead. Jonatan Berggren cut the lead to one, 6-5, at 8:02, and then Perron’s tying goal came at 19:00 to send the game to overtime.
Detroit took two shots in overtime at 1:23 (Andrew Copp) and Berggren (4:55) but couldn’t get the winning goal.
Detroit will host Pittsburgh on Saturday at Little Ceasars Arena.
