ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Freshman forward Adam Fantilli earned the top college award on Friday night in Tampa, Fla., at the Frozen Four as the Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner. That came after Michigan fell to #3 Quinnipiac, 5-2, on Thursday night in the Frozen Four.

The Baker Memorial Award is given annually to college hockey’s top student-athlete. He is the third Wolverine to earn the award joining Brendan Morrison (1997) and Kevin Porter (2008). Fantilli leads the nation in scoring with 65 points scoring 30 goals with 35 assists in 36 games. He averaged 1.81 points per game, 0.83 goals per game and 0.98 assists per game.

This award adds to the many awards he had earned this year in the Tim Taylor National Rookie of the Year, All-America first-team, Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player, College Hockey News Player of the Year, All-Big Ten first-team, Big Ten All-Rookie Team, and the NCAA All-Regional Team. He is projected to be the no. 2 overall selection in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Michigan’s season came to an end in the Frozen Four to Quinnipiac at the Amalie Arena in the semi-final NCAA Tournament game in Tampa, Fla. Quinnipiac scored first at 5:18 but Seamus Casey tied the game at one almost a minute and half later at 6:49. Quinnipiac took the lead at 11:21, 2-1, and held onto it the rest of the period. Fantilli tied the game at two in the second period at 10:15. Quinnipiac then scored three in the third period to end the Wolverine’s hope of defending their national championship.

Fantilli says, “I’m proud of this group as they battled so hard.”

Michigan finishes at 26-12-3 on the season and won the Big Ten Championship.
