DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Unanimous All-American Jalen Carter, a defensive tackle from Georgia, made a visit to Detroit as he tries to improve his character and status for the 2023 NFL Draft next weekend. Carter has been surrounded by some controversy after two people were killed in a car accident in January.

Lions General Manager Brad Holmes said after the visit, “He came in and he did a nice job. Again, it’s always case by case. He came in, we enjoyed our time with him, he did a nice job. I’ll say even after he left his visit, I felt better about him.”

Carter pleaded no-contest to a misdemeanor charge from the accident where a staff member and former player both were killed in a fatal crash from reckless driving. He was given 12 months on probation, a $1,000 fin and 80 hours of community service and will have to attend state-approved defensive driving course.

The All-SEC first team selection feels that those actions may hurt him on draft day. He says, “NFL teams look deep into your life. It could’ve been something I did back in elementary school and I’m pretty sure they’ll know. So, this coming out at the time id did come out, I’m pretty sure it’s gonna affect a little bit.”

Holmes is unsure of what Detroit will do with its two first-round draft picks but wants to be prepared and have as much information as he can for owner Sheila Ford Hamp. “That’s par of my job is to make sure she’s informed. So, if we go that route of acquiring a player that may stir some headlines, yeah, you definitely want to make sure that she’s aware and that’s kind of we always ran our process and our approach. She’s an excellent listener, she sees things all big picture and she has a lot of wise counsel.”

Detroit holds the no. 6 and no. 18 first round picks this year in the NFL Draft.
