ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Turnovers in the final minute of the game cost Michigan a win in the second round of the NIT as Vanderbilt took a one-point win, 66-65. Michigan led 65-57 with 1:45 left in the game but Vanderbilt finished on a 9-0 run ending the Wolverines season.

“It was really hard and really tough to lose that way,” said junior Hunter Dickinson. “It’s just frustrating the way the season ended as we gave the game away.”

Vanderbilt took the lead with 12 seconds left on a goal tending call, 66-65. Michigan had time for a last second shot but Dug McDaniel but it fell short and Dickinson’s tip wasn’t close to going in as time expired.

Dickinson led the team with 21 points and 11 rebounds while McDaniel added 19 points and Joey Baker had 11 points. Michigan only shot 25 percent from the arc making just three three-pointers but did win the rebounding battle, 39-23.

Michigan had a one-point lead at the half, 30-29, and had a 10-point lead with 10:52 left in the game on two Dickinson free throws. Vanderbilt was within four in the next seven minutes but Baker hit a jumper with 1:45 left for an eight-point lead, 65-57. A three-point play started Vanderbilt’s 9-0 run with 58 seconds left to come within five, 65-60. Just nine seconds later, UM turned the ball over and fouled Vandy as they made both free throws with 49 seconds left to pull within three, 65-62. Another turnover with 38 seconds left turned into two more points for Vanderbilt with 20 seconds to go pulling to within one, 65-64. Two seconds later, the third turnover took place with 18 seconds left and Vanderbilt hit the go ahead shot with 12 seconds left, 66-65. Vandy’s defense then stopped the Wolverine’s last second chance to win the game.

The Wolverines end the season at 18-16.
