ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Mason Parris final won a Big Ten Championship at the heavyweight division in overtime at home in Crisler Arena. UM finished fifth at the championships as Parris was the shining moment for the program.
Parris earned a 5-3 decision in overtime against Penn State’s No. 2 Greg Kerkvliet. He led most of the bout starting early with a fireman’s carry in the first period. He earned an escape in the third period as time ticked down to 56 seconds. After a second stall warning that evened the score, overtime came. He then spun behind Kerkvliet in overtime on a go behind and ran through him for the takedown and win.

He has twice been the Big Ten runner-up at heavyweight in 2020 and 2021 and is currently the no. 1 wrestler with a 28-0 record. He has now defeated three top-10 wrestlers in his last five bouts. Parris become the first Michigan wrestler since 1998 when Airron Richardson won the Big Ten heavyweight championship.
Michigan will next participate in the NCAA Championships from March 16-18 in Tulsa, Okla.
