EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan State held onto a much needed Big Ten victory with an 84-78 win in East Lansing on Saturday afternoon. On Senior Day and the final regular season game, MSU won their 19th game of the year sealing an 11-8 record in the Big Ten.

“The crowd was awesome. Senior Day is a tough day for everybody, especially this year. And, you know, we’re kind of on break and a lot of those kids stayed, and I can’t thank everybody enough, the community and everybody that did their job,” said head coach Tom Izzo.

A.J. Hoggard tied his career-high of 23 points and five players scored in double figures. Joey Hauser added 16 points while Tyson Walker had 15 points, Jaden Akins 13 points, and Malik Hall 10 points. Both teams had 29 rebounds and MSU shot 54 percent from the floor also making 12 three-pointers for 60 percent.

After OSU was up 4-2 to start the game, MSU went on a 15-0 run over five minutes for a 13-point lead, 17-4, as Tre Holloman hit a three-pointer. OSU had the lead down to four, 25-21, with 6:39 left but the lead was back to 10 points, 36-26, on an Akins three-point play at 3:15. The lead stayed at nine points at the half when Walker hit a shot with 53 seconds left, 43-34.

The Buckeyes pulled to within five, 45-40, just over a minute into the second half. Three minutes later, MSU put the lead back at 10, 56-46, on a Hoggard layup. Walker then made a layup at 12:46 for a 12-point lead, 61-49, but in the next seven minutes OSU cut the lead to three, 67-64, on a 15-6 run at 5:40. MSU would take as large as an eight-point lead in the last five minutes as they held onto the six-point win, 84-78.

They will now wait to see where they will be seeded in the Big Ten Tournament for next weekend.
