WASHINGTON (Michigan News Source) – A Michigan man will spend nine months in prison for breaking into the U.S. Capitol building during the January 6 riots. Anthony Puma claims he was “tricked” by former President Donald Trump and said, “I have no excuse for my actions and I throw myself at the mercy of the court hoping for leniency.”
One week before the Capitol riot, Puma posted on Facebook: “On the 6th when we are all there in the capital [sic] and he [former President Trump] is givin [sic] his second term the people will see. Then you never know we might have to start killing some commie bastards.” On January 5, he posted: “Hopefully we are storming the House of Representatives tomorrow at 1:00 PM.”

The next day, Puma strapped a GoPro to his head and recorded himself entering the Capitol building through a broken window. He then attempted to join other rioters in smoking marijuana in the office of Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon), shouting, “This is the party room!” and asking if anyone was willing to share the drugs.
As he continued up the hallway, another rioter warned him, “We’ve got to go. There’s a SWAT team on the way [and] they’re arresting everybody.” Puma answered, “That’s a lie” and continued further into the building.
Afterward, Puma posted a video of the riot to Facebook and said: “We got tear gassed. Now we just tried storming it again and we got pepper sprayed.” This post was followed by an anonymous warning four days later: “Watch what is to come in the next two weeks. It will shock the world.”
Puma’s lawyer argued that it was not immediately clear how serious the Capital riot was, and that Puma “was horrified when he realized what he was a part of that day.” According to court documents, his lawyer argued that “[Puma] acknowledged that he was encouraged by the former President Trump and has disavowed himself from any dangerous propaganda that led him to commit a crime. While this does not excuse his actions, Mr. Puma genuinely feels tricked by the former president who he trusted would not steer him down an illegal path.”
Puma cooperated with the FBI’s investigation and pleaded guilty to one count of obstruction of an official proceeding. He will pay a $500 fine and $2000 in restitution alongside his prison sentence.
