DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – March is Women’s History Month and as a part of that month the Detroit Pistons will honor 2003 WNBA Champions Detroit Shock. The Pistons announced on Tuesday that they will honor the 20th anniversary of the championship won in 2003. The celebration will happen on March 9 during the Pistons’ Women’s Empowerment Game against the Charlotte Hornets.

Pistons Vice Chairman Arn Tellem says, “We are pleased to welcome back the members of this great team during the Women’s History Month and recognize them for delivering the first WNBA championship to Detroit. The team truly embodied the spirit, fight, and grit of the city and pulled off a remarkable feat with a historic turnaround in just one season. We’re excited to celebrate their place in Detroit sports history.”

In 2002, the Shock went just 9-23 which was the worst record in the league. The next season, Pistons legend Bill Laimbeer, guided the Shock to a league-best 25-9 record. They then won the WNBA Finals Series over the Los Angeles Sparks, 2-1. Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Swin Cash, 2003 WNBA Rookie of the Year Cheryl Ford, 2003 WNBA Finals MVP Ruth Riley, and Deanna Nolan all sparked the run to the championship that season. The Shock went on to  also win championships in 2006 and 2008 but then left Detroit for Tulsa, Oklahoma, on October 19, 2009. The WNBA never placed another team in Detroit.
