DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The good times keep rolling for the Red Wings as they took a huge win over the New York Rangers, 4-1. The Rangers have 33 wins and in third place in the Metropolitan Division nine points out of first place.
“You go on a run like this and you continually find ways to win, you’re usually getting contributions from everyone. That’s been the case. Just a really good win. We beat a really good team at home,” said head coach Derek Lalonde.
Detroit moved to 28-21-8 for 64 points and now officially hold the second and final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The last time Detroit was this close to occupying a playoff spot came in the 2016-16 season.
It was Andrew Copp that helped the Red Wings to victory with a goal and two assists. Copp scored the first goal of the game at 15:33 in the first period off a backhand pass from Michael Rasmussen. Early in the second period, New York tied it up at one at 6:06. Filip Zadina put the Red Wings ahead, 2-1, at 8:18 set up by Dylan Larkin off a left-faceoff.
David Perron made it 3-1 in the third period at 18:02 on his own rebound. Filip Hronek gave Detroit the three-goal lead, 4-1, at 4:51 on as assist from Copp and Dominik Kubalik on a power play goal.
Ville Husso won his 23rd game of the year with 30 saves. He said, “We just came in today and tried to get the win. It’s not easy after a long road trip. We did a good job in Washington coming from the West Coast all the way to the East Coast to play a game there (East Coast) and then come home. We didn’t shake yesterday and no morning skate today, so we were ready to play.”
Detroit will have their second-straight home game on Saturday night vs. Tampa Bay at 8:00 p.m.
