ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan State played in their first game since the tragedy on campus in less than a week taking on their rival Michigan in Ann Arbor. In an emotional game, the Spartans came up shy of defeating their rival Michigan, 84-72. Dug McDaniel had a career-high 18 points for the Wolverines as Kobe Bufkin added 17. Joey Huser led the Spartans with 20 points.

MSU tied the game at 72 with 2:29 left in the game but Michigan had one more offensive burst to finish off the game. Bufkin and Hunter Dickinson had back-to-back three-pointers that started a 12-0 run as they finished the game not allowing another MSU point.

Michigan shot 49 percent in the game and making nine three-pointers and was 17-of-21 at the line. MSU was steady, too, at 47 percent from the floor, 36 percent from the arc, and was 9-of-10 in free throws. UM out rebounded MSU, 38-25, and had 16 points off turnovers.

MSU had a three-point lead at the half, 36-33, and a six-point lead, 39-33, in the first 10 seconds of the second half. MSU kept a five-point lead, 46-41, with 15:24 left but UM tied it at 46 just over a minute later. There were three ties after that until MSU pushed their lead back to six, 63-57, with 8:23 left. Four more ties took place in the next five minutes with the leas at 72 with 2:29 to go. That’s when UM went on the 12-0 run to end the game for the win.

Michigan will be at Rutgers on Feb. 23 at 8:30 p.m. in their next game.
