SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Winter temperatures are starting to set in and the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie wants to remind everyone about safety when it comes to ice thickness.
For walking, ice fishing, and ice skating, officials recommend at least 4 inches of ice.

Snowmobiles require 5 to 6 inches. Cars need 8 to 12 inches and a pickup truck should drive on at least 12 to 15 inches of ice thickness.
Officials also said that if people park their vehicle on the ice, it should remain at least 50 feet away from other vehicles or ice shacks.
