FLINT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Bed Bath & Beyond retail store chain is saying goodbye to another seven stores in MIchigan, raising the total to 17 stores closing in the state within the last year. 

The Michigan stores closing are:

  • Flint: 3605 Miller Road
  • Holland: 3050 Beeline Road Suite 30
  • Okemos: 1982 West Grand River Ave.
  • Portage: 5930 S. Westnedge Ave.
  • Saginaw: 4420 Bay Road
  • Troy: 650 John R. Road
  • Westland: 35615 Warren Road

On Tuesday the company said it would close an additional 150 stores nationwide and raise more than $1 billion funding through a public stock offering according to the Detroit Free Press.  

Previously, the company announced five other store closures throughout Michigan just less than a month ago. The company announced the following store closures on Tuesday: Ann Arbor, Auburn Hills, Brighton, Lansing, and Muskegon.  Auburn Hills is no longer listed as being open on the company’s website.

President and CEO Sue Gove said in a prepared statement in January that the company is working on adjusting its merchandise and strategy, which has moved away from shoppers’ preferences.

“We want our customers to know that we hear them and are charging ahead every day to meet their needs,” she said.

Despite the company’s struggling financial state, Columbia Law Professor Edward Morrison said consumer-focused companies entering bankruptcy work “as hard as possible” to honor gift cards and warranties during the bankruptcy process to retain customer confidence, according to Freep.

“Even if Bed Bath & Beyond enters bankruptcy, it is highly likely that it is going to honor its gift cards,” he said. But “there is a real risk that any retailer entering bankruptcy won’t come out. And those gift cards may become valueless.”

Over the past year, the company has closed more than 400 stores, half of its overall physical footprint.  After these closures, the following Michigan locations will remain Beverly Hills, Grand Rapids, Novi, Petosky, Rochester Hills, Roseville, Sterling Heights, Taylor, and Traverse City.
