The State Historic Preservation Office nominated the decommissioned Cold War-era station for the recognition in September.

The station sits atop Mt. Baldhead and began operating in the late 1950s.

During the early times of the Cold War the radar station was the last line of defense to detect any enemy aircraft flying over Lake Michigan, possibly targeting places like Chicago.
