ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – If winning on January 1 is a sign of how 2023 will go for the University of Michigan, the Wolverines are headed in the right direction with a 35-point win over Maryland. Michigan allowed just 13 points in the first half holding the Terrapins to just four made field goals and 13 percent shooting in that half.

Hunter Dickinson had his second 30-point game of the year with 32 points recording his 20th career double-double grabbing 12 rebounds. Terrance Williams II added 11 points and five rebounds as Jett Howard had six points and six rebounds.

Michigan shot 66 percent in the first half and finished shooting 50 percent for the game. They went 22-of-29 at the line (75 percent) but only made 27 percent of the three-pointers. The Wolverines defense held Maryland to just 26.5 percent shooting from the floor, 20 percent from the arc, and 55 percent at the stripe. Michigan also our rebounded Maryland, 49-30.

Michigan jumped out to a 17-0 lead going 7-of-7 from the field not missing a shot for almost six minutes. The 13 points that Maryland was held to tied the program record for fewest first-half points allowed. Maryland didn’t hit a shot from the floor until 12:09 with a three-pointer to make it 19-4 after a free throw was made at 14:12. Dickinson made two free throws at 4:30 for a 26-piont lead, 33-7. Dug McDaniel ended the half with a jumper with one second left for a 31-point lead, 44-13.

A dunk by Dickinson at 17:11 in the second half put Michigan up 34 points, 52-18. He then gave Michigan a 36-point lead, 61-25, on a jumper at the 11:49 mark and then a minute later Joey Baker put the Wolverines up by 38, 63-25, on two free throws. That was the largest lead of the game as Michigan kept the lead at 30+ points the rest of the way for the 81-46 win.

Michigan will next play on January 4 hosting Penn State at 7:00 p.m. concluding their three-game homestand.
