GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Standing at 12-1 on the year, Grand Valley State University is currently fourth in the nation in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) poll on January 3. They received 447 points and two first place votes and were just 23 points from being second. They are the top ranked GLIAC team and sit at 3-0 with wins over #20 Ferris State, Lake Superior State, and Davenport.

GVSU started the year off 12-0 and dropped their first game of the year on December 31 to Lewis University, 69-63, at home. Besides their loss to Lewis and an eight-point win over Ferris State, 78-80, GVSU was averaging close to 40-point wins over their opponents. On December 28, they defeated Grace Christian, 102-18, for their 12th straight win.

Prior to their loss on December 31, GVSU was the number one team in the nation. They started off the season as the number one team in the preseason poll after going 31-3 last year and finishing in the NCAA Division II Final Four. At one point in the season, in the December 13 poll, they had all 22 first-place votes. In the December 20 poll it was 21 first-place votes before fall to two first-place votes in the latest poll after their loss.

GVSU starts the 2023 portion of their schedule this week on the road at Wisconsin Parkside on January 5 and Purdue Northwest on January 7.
