ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – In a packed Crisler Arena with over 10,000 fans, the no. 17 University of Michigan women’s basketball team dominated Michigan State, 70-55, for their 15th win of the year. Michigan led by as many as 18-points in the game and it is the first time in program history for the Wolverines to have back-to-back home crowds of over 10,000 fans. UM forced 22 turnovers in the win that ended up giving them 22 points.

Four players scored in double figures as Leigha Brown had 17 points and six assists. Emily Kiser added 14 points and six rebounds while Laila Phelia had 12 points and Maddie Nolan 10 points. UM shot 43 percent from the floor making nine three-pointers as MSU only shot 35 percent from the floor. Kamaria McDaniel led the Spartans with 12 points.

MSU took charge early with an 8-2 run to start the game but then hit a six minute scoreless spree as UM took the lead, 9-8, in the first quarter with just over two minutes left to play. It was Brown’s three-pointer that put UM in the lead at 2:21 and then Cameron Williams added a trey at the end of the first for a three-point lead, 14-11. MSU took a one-point lead, 15-14, at 9:18 in the second quarter but UM went on a 10-2 run for an eight point lead, 24-16, with 6:11 left. Williams then had a layup at 1:42 for a 10-point lead, 33-23, as UM coasted to an eight-point lead at the half, 35-27.

The Spartans didn’t go away easily in the third quarter coming within five points, 38-33, with 6:19 to go on a Taiyier Parks jumper. With 2:53 left, the UM lead was still at five points when MSU’s Julia Ayrault had a layup making it 44-39. UM, though, ended the quarter on a 12-0 run for a 12-point lead, 51-39, headed to the fourth quarter.  Two Emily Kiser free throws at the 7:33 mark gave UM a 15-point lead, 59-44. Jordan Hobbs then nailed a three-pointer at 5:24 for a 17-point lead, 63-46, and then with 57 seconds left in the game Siri Wiggins made a free throw for an 18-point lead, 70-52. That was the final point of the game for UM as MSU had two free throws with 45 seconds left making it 70-55.

UM moves to 5-2 in the Big Ten as MSU is now 10-8 overall and 2-5 in the Big Ten.
