ALBION, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Department of Diversity, Equity, and Belonging at Albion College has a new leader at the helm in the wake of racial slur allegations against its basketball coach.
Taran McZee is the new Chief Belonging Officer for Albion College. He most recently worked at Grand Valley State University as the director of GV Prep dual enrollment and the TRIO program.

McZee’s hiring comes during a tough time for the school. Albion College basketball players have accused the Coach Jody May of using racial slurs during practice, and the Student Senate released this statement on Instagram: “We are disgusted by the remarks and disappointed by the schools reaction. On behalf of the Albion College Student Body we, the Albion College Student Senate, stand with the Men’s Basketball Team and the entirety of the student body, and are advocating for proper repercussions while hoping to work alongside the administration.”
Multiple reports say May kicked a player out of practice for getting into a verbal altercation with another player. May said the player used a racial slur during practice. The coach then repeated that slur during practice attempting to turn the incident into a teachable moment for the team.
May has apologized and been suspended for three games. A letter from Interim President Joe Calvaruso to Albion College earlier this week confirmed May repeated “racial epithets.” According to the letter, Coach May is undergoing cultural sensitivity training.
