MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A long standing tradition will be brought back to Central Michigan basketball in January with the “Toilet Paper Toss.” This is the 40th anniversary of the first Toilet Paper Toss in 1982-83 and will be a White Out game against rival Western Michigan on Saturday, January 28.
“We are extremely excited to bring this event to our fans,” says CMU Zyzelewski Family Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Amy Folan. “This game will have something for everyone. CMU will honor former NBA great Dan Majerle played 14 seasons in the NBA winning a Bronze Medal in the 1988 Summer Olympics and a Gold Medal int eh 1994 FIBA World Championships. At CMU, he averaged 21.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game helping the Chippewas to the 1987 NCAA Tournament. In the 1988 NBA Draft, he was selected 14th overall by the Suns.
The Toilet Paper Toss started by the student section called the Snake Pit. Students wore maroon t-shirts with a snake log as the name came from a rival coach saying playing in that arena is like being in a snake pit. An iconic photo of the Toilet Paper Toss was taken in 1987 by CMU photographer Peggy Brisbane that was then published in People Magazine.
The first 2,500 fans to the game on January 28 will receive while pompoms and the first 250 students will get a free Snake Pit tee-shirt. Majerle will be recognized during the contest, too.
The game will tipoff in the McGuirk Arena at 7:00 p.m.
