DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Down by two, 134-132, with just under two minutes to play in overtime, Detroit finished on 9-0 run shutting down the Charlotte Hornets for a 141-134 victory. Six Pistons scored in double figures as Alec Burks led with 27 points, Killian Hayes added 25 points, and Bojan Bogdanovic added 24 points.

Helping Burks, Hayes, and Bogdanovic in scoring were Isaiah Stewart (19 points), Kevin Knox II (17 points), and Jaden Ivey (13 points). Detroit shot 51 percent from the floor and made 18 three-pointers for 45 percent. They held Charlotte to 41 percent on the floor and 33 percent at the arc.

Burks had he shot that started the 9-0 run in overtime canning a three-pointer with 1:47 left in the game to make it 135-134. Jalen Duren then blocked Kelly Oubre Jr.’s layup which turned into a Hayes jump shot to make it 138-134 with 1:11 left to play. Detroit’s defense then had two in a seven second time span to keep their four-point lead in tact with 29 seconds left. Charlotte’s Terry Rozier then missed a 25-foot shot with 27 seconds left and 14 seconds later Hayes connected on one of two free throws for a five-point lead, 139-134. Bogdanovic made two free throws with 8.1 seconds left pushing the lead to seven, 141-134. Charlotte missed a three-pointer with 5.1 seconds left as Duren pulled down the rebound to secure the win.

In the first period, Knox II hit a three-pointer with 9.1 seconds left for a 35-31 lead. Charlotte made a shot with 0.2 seconds left to cut the lead to two, 35-33, to end the first. Charlotte went up 41-37 two minutes into the second quarter. The lead went to seven points, 60-53, for Charlotte with 4:27 to go. Detroit went on a 15-6 run over four minutes to take a 68-66 lead and ended the half with a four-point lead, 73-69, outscoring the Hornets, 20-9 in that time.

Detroit took a 10-point lead in the third quarter, 88-78, at the 8:12 mark on a Stewart shot. Charlotte cut the lead to three, 90-87, but a Burks three-point play put the score at 95-87 with 3:40 left to play. With 1:53 left, Detroit moved their lead to 13 points, 103-90 when Stewart added another two-point shot. Charlotte did bring the lead down to 10, 107-97, at the end of third.

Scoring on 20 points in the fourth, Charlotte tied the game at 127 to send it to overtime. Duren gave Detroit the two-point lead, 127-125, with 29.1 seconds left making one of two free throws. Charlotte then took two shots and missed before Mason Plumlee tipped in a shot with 12.1 seconds left to tie the game at 127. With 1.2 seconds left, Bogdanovic’s step back shot was missed and then Charlotte’s last attempt at the buzzer missed as the game went into overtime where Detroit won.

Detroit will start a three-game home stand on Friday, Dec. 16, at 7:00 p.m. hosting Sacramento.
