ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – In grand fashion, Michigan stomped Nebraska, 34-3, on Saturday to move to 10-0 on the year and 7-0 in the Big Ten. This is the best start under Jim Harbaugh in his tenure and the first undefeated start since 2006 when Michigan went 11-0. Michigan now owns the longest home winning streak in the Big Ten at 14 games.
“So much hard work has gone in to this team being undefeated. So many guys have done so much. Worked so hard. A lot of hard work has gone into this and we want to keep it going,” says head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Michigan finished with a balanced 412 yards of total offense rushing for 264 yards and passing 148 yards. Blake Corum continued his run as the top running back in the nation vying for the Heisman Trophy with 162 yards rushing and one touchdown. It was the his 10th career game with 100+ yards rushing and seventh consecutive 100-yard game. J.J. McCarthy passed for two touchdowns while rushing for one.
“I have the best offensive line in the country. They dominate up front,” says Corum. “My tight ends dominate, my receivers dominate. Everyone is dominating. We have success in finding those match ups and really run hard. We didn’t have any long runs today but it was gritty. A lot of runs up the middle and a lot of success.”
Jumping out to a 14-0 lead, Michigan was in control from the beginning. Corum had a two-yard run with 4:26 left in the first quarter on an 80-yard drive. With 8:46 on the clock in the second quarter, McCarthy hit Ronnie Bell from nine-yards out to make it 14-0. Nebraska put their only points on the board with a field goal with 4:10 left in the second quarter. Jake Moody then kicked a 30-yard field goal with one second left in the quarter for the 17-3 lead at the half.
McCarthy was the only score in the third quarter on a three-yard run pushing the lead to 24-3. In the fourth, McCarthy threw a touchdown pass to Andrel Athony for the 31-3 lead. Moody finished off the scoring on a 43-yard field goal with 1:17 to play making it 34-3.
Michigan will have a tough test this week in their final home game hosting Illinois who is 7-3 and 4-3 in the Big Ten.
