KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The historic season for the Western Michigan University Broncos came to a close on Sunday night in the NCAA Tournament to Portland, 1-0. Their 16 wins are the second most in program history as they won their second and final Mid-American Conference championship as the conference suspends play in men’s soccer after this season.
This season also brought the Broncos third NCAA Tournament appearance and second time in the Sweet 16 while setting a new record for consecutive wins at nine. The team also finished with the top ranked defense in the nation.

After a scoreless first half, including a great save by Hunter Morse on a penalty kick in the 13th minute, Portland found the back of the net in the 59th minute. Defender Delentz Pierre came up and headed in the game winning goal. Portland then held off the attacking offense of the Broncos to advance to the Elite Eight.
WMU out shot Portland, 11-9, but only had three shots on goal to Portland’s eight.
