ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Down 17-14 at the half, Michigan scored 38 points and shut-out Rutgers for the 52-17 victory moving to 9-0 on the year. This is the first 9-0 start for Michigan since the 2016 season as J.J. McCarthy won his eight straight game at quarterback.
Blake Corum strengthened his campaign for the Heisman with 109 yards rushing on 20 carries and two touchdowns. Donovan Edwards also has 109 yards rushing as Michigan’s offense produced 433 total yards with 302 yards on the ground.
“It’s become the standard around here to rush for over 200 yards every game no matter who’s carrying the ball. We like it when Donovan gets involved and obviously Blake is our bell cow. We get Blake the ball and get him yards obviously but it’s good to get reps to others,” says Olu Oluwatimi.
Michigan scored six times out of seven in the red zone and took over the third quarter. For the season, they are outscoring teams, 84-6, scoring 28 points vs. Rutgers. The defense provided those situations for them shutting out Rutgers in the second half.
Rutgers only had 14 rushing yards in the game and just one rushing yard at the half and just 180 yards of total offense. Michael Barrett recorded his first pick-six with a 31-yard interception for the touchdown as Michigan went up 35-17 in the third quarter. The defense had two sacks and three interceptions on the day.
Barrett says, “I saw where he was throwing it and broke on it and once he tipped it I was like just catch the ball and that’s all I was thinking about and once I got it into my hands I said ‘I have to take this one for six. This was first time for a pick-six and it felt great.”
Corum scored first from one yard out with 8:47 in the first. Rutgers tied the game on a seven-yard blocked punt at the 5:04 mark. McCarthy then rushed in for a one-yard touchdown (1:46) for the 14-7 lead. Rutgers then shut-out Michigan in the second quarter scoring 10 points on a field goal and a three-yard run for the 17-14 halftime lead.
Michigan erupted for 28 points in the third quarter as Edwards was the first touchdown on a 14-yard pass from McCarthy with 8:24 on the clock. Less than two minutes later, Corum collected his second touchdown of the day from two yards out. Just 11 seconds later, Barrett had his pick-six and then Cornelius Johnson caught a six-yard pass to make it 42-17.
A Jake Moody 29-yard field at 11:18 in the fourth quarter and then a four-yard Isaiah Gash run finished out the scoring (3:23) making it 52-17.
Michigan will host Nebraska on November 12 at 3:30 p.m
