CORUNNA, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Vote total discrepancies between the city of Owosso and Shiawassee County, which added confusion to election outcomes on Wednesday for the Owosso City Council and the Owosso School Board, have been corrected.

The City of Owosso reported their vote totals did not reflect the numbers posted by Shiawassee County for city council and school board races on the election reporting website. So the city worked with the county to correct the numbers.
The discrepancies left the two races in limbo into Wednesday night, with winners being reported, retracted, renamed, then solidified.
Michigan News Sourced reached out to The Argus Press, a newspaper in Owosso which has covered the election count. Reporter Matthew Bartow told Michigan News Source that twelve people ran for four open slots in the hotly contested Owosso School Board race. The initial election count showed incumbents Shelley Ochodnicky and Rick Mowen reelected to their seats, with newcomers Nick Henne and Vanessa Senk winning the remaining two seats.
The doublecheck of the numbers showed Senk came in fifth, bumping her off the board and reinstating winner and incumbent Olga Quick to the Owosso School Board. Ochodnicky, Mowen, and Henne’s votes remained the same and thus kept them on the board.
A similar incident happened in the city council race. That race also saw 12 people running for four spots. The county initially named newcomer Chris Owens as one winner in the initial count, but later showed he finished in fifth place. Final numbers revealed Councilwoman Janae Fear keeps her spot on the city council, with Jerry Haber, Emily Olson, and Nicholas Pidek joining her.
Nathan Henne, Owosso City Manager, called it a “misunderstanding” at the county level.
“The city has been and always been confident in our numbers,” Henne told Michigan News Source on Thursday. “Everything checked out and balanced. We worked with the county throughout [Wednesday] to correct those unofficial results.”

Calls to the Shiawassee County Clerk Caroline Wilson were not returned by press time. However, Bartow told Michigan News Source the error occurred in the exportation of the results on part of the county, and that the city of Owosso had nothing to do with the error.
