DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – On Monday, the Detroit Tigers held off the Seattle Mariners, 4-3, to win the series opener. Tuesday brought a double-header that was rescheduled from April 1. In game one, Seattle, who is playoff bound for the first time in over 20 years, had a walk-off win, 7-6, in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Tied at five, Detroit’s Riley Greene had a sacrifice fly to center field as Victor Reyes came in for the go ahead score, 6-5. Detroit had a chance to add another run with two outs and two runners on but a fly out ended the threat.

It only took three batters for the Mariners in the bottom of the 10th to record the win. Greg Soto, who had 30 saves on the year and 60 strikeouts, gave up a single right away to centerfield as the runner placed on second came in to tie the game at six. Seattle’s next batter recorded an infield single as the runner went to third base. The walk-off run then came on sacrifice fly to end the game, 7-6, as Soto took the loss.
Eduardo Rodriguez started his 18th game of the season going six innings allowing just three earned runs and recording seven strikeouts. Four other pitchers were used after that before Soto came in to close the game.
Jeimer Candelario, Spencer Torkelson, and Reyes all had two hits to lead the team. Greene, Torkelson, and Reyes recorded two RBI.
Detroit scored first in the top of the third when Greene doubled in Reyes. Seattle answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning for the two-run advantage. It didn’t take Detroit long to tie the game at three as they posted two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Torkelson hit his seventh home run of the year with a two-run shot to left field that was a 426 foot blast.
In the top of the seventh inning, Reyes landed a 401 foot home run to right field scoring himself and Torkelson to make it 5-3. Seattle came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning tying it up at five where it stayed until the 10th inning.
The second game of the double header took place late Tuesday night in Seattle. They will finish the series on Wednesday at 4:10 p.m. eastern time.
