DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – For the third time this season, Detroit has let a team come back to win a game as the Miami Dolphins came away with the 31-27 win. In control at halftime, 27-17, the Lions gave up 14 third-quarter points and didn’t score a point in the second half.
“That was tough to say the least. Those guys came back and played well the second half, stayed to their game plan and we didn’t overcome it,” says head coach Dan Campbell. “The second half we stalled out offensively and had penalties and defensively we couldn’t stop those receivers.”
It was track meet between the two teams and that was something that Campbell didn’t want to happen. He says, “We didn’t want a track meet and we turned it into a track meet. We had a little over 300 yards of offense. It’s tough. We did not do well with this game plan we designed for these guys.”
Detroit gave up almost 500 yards of offense to Miami (476 yards) as 369 yards were in the air. Detroit finished with 393 yards of offense as 311 came throwing and only 82 yards on the ground. Jared Goff was 27-of-37 for 321 yards and one touchdown. Jamaal Williams rushed for 53 of the 82 yards recording two touchdowns. T.J. Hockenson led the team with 80 yards receiving and D’Andre Swift had the lone receiving touchdown.
“They had their way with us. They did it over and over again and we knew what they were going to do and we didn’t stop it. This is on all of us. When the result is like this it is all of us,” says Campbell.
Detroit took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on two a rushing and passing touchdown. Williams ran in from seven-yards out on their first possession with 12:59 to play. Swift then caught a seven-yard touchdown pass with 5:36 to go for the 14-point lead. Miami cut the lead to seven at the end of the first to make it 14-7.
Williams ran for his second touchdown at the 13:46 mark in the second quarter from one-yard out as Detroit went up 21-7. With 11:30 to go, Miami scored on a 29-yard pass as they were within seven again, 21-14. Michael Badgley nailed a 42-yard field goal with 7:02 to go extending the Lions lead to 10, 24-24. Miami answered with a field goal just before the two-minute warning to pull within seven, 24-17. Badgley then hit a second field goal in the quarter as time expired from 26-yards out for the 10-point lead, 27-17. That was the last points for Detroit.
Miami went on to score two touchdowns in the third quarter to take the lead and hold Detroit to no points.
Green Bay will be in Detroit on November 6 at 1:00 p.m.
