MARQUETTE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The nonprofit Nature Conservancy says 31,000 acres of forest on the Upper Peninsula’s Keweenaw Peninsula will be preserved forever.
This move is the latest large U.P. land transaction by the conservancy, which has led several high-profile efforts to exclude the region’s wild landscapes from fragmentation and development.

The conservancy purchased the land for around $27 million after being placed on the market last year.
Nature Conservancy is also behind a transaction in the early 2000s that preserved access and limited development on 271,000 privately-owned acres spanning eight U.P. counties.
The protected areas have been named the Keweenaw Heartlands.
