DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – A 40-point second quarter propelled the Detroit Pistons to a four-point win over the Orlando Magic, 113-109, at the Little Caesars Arena. Bojan Bogdanovic, who joined Detroit  less than a month ago in a trade with the Utah Jazz, led the team with 24 points making 50% of his shots. He was one of five Pistons scoring in double figures.

Jaden Ivey had 19 points and Cade Cunningham 18 points adding a double-double with 10 assists. Isaiah Stewart came away with 14 points while Jalen Duren, in his first NBA game, posted 14 points and 10 rebounds. Six players for Orlando came away with double figures as Polo Banchero led with 27 points.

Detroit shot 42.6% from the floor and made 79% of their free throws (19-of-24). They forced 18 turnovers with 11 steals.

Orlando took a 28-17 lead after the first quarter. With the quarter tied at six, Orlando went on a 15-0 run for a 21-6 lead with 5:59 left. Detroit made just five shots with four coming inside and no three-pointers made.

It was a different story in the second quarter as Detroit started to find their rhythm. The Pistons slowly ate away at the 11-point lead and with four minutes left until halftime Cunningham landed a 27-foot shot for the lead, 44-43. Orlando took back the lead on the next possession, 45-44, but a 8-0 run put Detroit back in front by six, 52-45 on two free throws from Stewart. Detroit then held onto their lead with a two-point halftime lead, 57-55.

Both teams went at each other in the third quarter as Orlando jumped ahead, 66-62, just four minutes into the period. At the 6:47 mark, Bogdanovic canned a 28-foot three-pointer for a two-point lead, 68-66. Ivey then made it 73-68 on another three-pointer a minute later.  Bogdanovic hit his second three-pointer in less than two minutes as Detroit pushed their lead to 76-69. A fourth straight three-pointer by the Pistons, this time by Cunningham, put the lead back at 10 points, 79-69, with 4:19 to go 13-3 run. Kevin Knox II nailed a three-pointer for an 11-point lead, 89-78, with 1:31 left. Cunningham hit a jumper with 9.5 seconds left to make it 91-83 to end the third.

The fourth became the closest quarter of the four as Detroit pulled off the win even though being outscored, 26-22. Orlando cut the lead to two points, 95-93, at the 7:43 mark and then tied the game at 99 with 5:17 left in the game. Duren banked in a layup with 4:56 left for the two-point lead, 101-99. An Ivey three-point play at the 4:06 mark put Detroit up by five, 104-99. Cunningham came through with 3:25 left on two free throws to extend the lead to seven, 106-99. With 34.5 seconds left in the game, Orlando came within one point, 108-107, but a clutch three-pointer with 11 seconds left by Stewart put the Pistons up by four, 111-107. Detroit then went 6-of-8 in free throws in the final five seconds for the four-point win, 113-109.

Detroit will be on the road for their next three games starting with the New York Knicks on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
