LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Over the weekend, Michigan Republican candidate for Attorney General Matt DePerno tweeted a story concerning a Catholic church in Michigan that was vandalized. The incident was caught on video so the investigation side of things seems easier than most; however, it doesn’t look like Nessel’s hate crime unit is looking into the incident.
DePerno asked Nessel in a tweet, “why are you silent about this clear attack on religious freedom and the right of pastors to speak against Prop 3?”

Pro abortion vandals caught on video writing messages of hate on church property. @dananessel why are you silent about this clear attack on religious freedom and right of pastors to speak against Prop 3? https://t.co/W4Pqr5gIqB

She tweeted back, “Good news, Matt! In 2019, I created the first AG dedicated Hate Crimes & Domestic Terrorism Unit! If you have evidence of a religious bias-motivated crime, you can report it directly to my department and we will investigate and prosecute the case.”

Is it the responsibility of DePerno, or even the church, to come up with “evidence”? Shouldn’t the AG office be doing that? And if there is a dedicated task force, why would they be ignoring a media report (and a police report) of a crime that would fit within the jurisdiction of the task force?
However, the AG’s office seems to be silent about looking into the incident on their own accord – or even condemning it.
Security footage reported by Fox News shows “three vandals dressed in black” who approached the Church of the Resurrection in Lansing, Michigan.
The vandals sprayed messages of hate that is both anti-church and pro-abortion on the property such as “abort the court” and “death fo Christian nationalism.”
There was even a death threat that read “IS OVERTURNING ROE WORTH YOUR LIFE OR YOUR DEMOCRACY?”
The graffiti appeared on the sidewalk, signage and church doors and has since been power-washed.
This incident isn’t an isolated incident. Many similar things have happened across the country since the Dobbs’ decision that overturned Roe v Wade. And appears that there is no accountability for any of these incidents. Fox News reports that “not a single arrest has been made in more than a dozen attacks on pro-life organizations across the country claimed by left-wing pro-abortion group, ‘Jane’s Revenge.’”
The Lansing Church has a sign outside that reads “To whomever vandalized our church: We forgive you and we are praying for you.”
Nessel’s AG office did not respond to our request for comment concerning whether they have initiated
a hate crime investigation or have any condemnation of the incident.
