GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – As the #1 team in NCAA Division II, Grand Valley State University continued their dominance with a 56-3 in front of a homecoming crowd of over 11,000 people in Allendale. Almost producing 500 yards of offense, the Lakers held NMU to just 146 yards in which 18 yards were rushing.
“This was a balanced win by all three phases of offense, defense, and special teams. We were really effective on offense in the red zone and didn’t have to look at a field goal as we were 7-of-7 there,” says head coach Matt Mitchell. “It was tough, gritty, and a physical football game. Our defense also controlled the line of scrimmage. We didn’t give a lot of explosive plays at all.”
GVSU scored 35 points in the first half only allowing a field goal in the first quarter. There were nine players that ran the ball as Tariq Reid had 58 yards and two touchdowns. Armani Moreno, Cody Tierney, and Cal Endicott also had rushing touchdowns. There were also nine players who caught the ball as Jordan Johnson recorded 59 yards. Jaylon Tillman and Drew Peterson both recorded touchdowns.
The defense recorded four sacks and seven tackles for loss. Abe Swanson led the team with seven tackles.
GVSU will play again on October 29 in Houghton, Mich., against Michigan Tech.
