YPSILANTI, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – After an incident earlier this fall with the police, Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball transfer and top star Emoni Bates has been reinstated by the school. He had been put on suspension per school regulations after being arrested earlier in September.

EMU released a statement saying, “The Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics has received notification that there is an agreement between the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s office and Emoni Bates’ defense team that would result in the felony charges being dismissed,” said in a statement from EMU athletic director Scott Wetherbee. “In accordance with EMU policies, Mr. Bates is immediately reinstated to all athletic and campus activities.”

Attorney Steve Haney, representing Bates, said to ESPN that Bates entered a plea deal in exchange for the dismissal of the two felony gun charges. There was no comment from the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s office. Bates was arrested on September 19 on two felony gun charges in a borrowed car from a friend. He was pulled over after failing to stop at the intersection of Nottingham Drive and Clark Road and then a firearm was discovered in the vehicle and taken into custody immediately.

Bates was the #1 player in the nation for 2022 until he reclassified for the 2021 class signing with Memphis. He entered the transfer portal this summer after a not-so-great freshman season at Memphis where he averaged 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.

He will start his second year of collegiate basketball on October 27 in an exhibition game against Grand Valley State.
