DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning guided Detroit to a win over Los Angeles Angels, 5-4. Ryan Kreidler, in front of family in California, made a moment to remember with his first career home run in the ninth inning to put Detroit up, 5-4.

He says, “It was a super heater. They had blown me up inside all day, so I was ready to go. I knew that lefty. I looked for a heater, got a heater and put a good swing on it.”

That home run followed the tying home run from Kerry Carpenter who was called up last week.

A.J. Hinch, the manager for Detroit, says, “This is a young group who has played together and they’re trying to find their way. They’re learning a lot. These are all unfamiliar situations, but they banded together, and today was a good reason why we like these guys.”

Kreidler’s hit was his fourth of his career and second RBI after being called up from Toledo. After that moment, he said, “We’re amped up. This is what you play for, moments like this.”

Eric Haase led the team going 5-for-5 with one RBI while Carpenter had two hits and one RBI.

Spencer Torkelson, who was the overall number one pick in 2020 and also brought back up last week, put Detroit up, 1-0, with a home run in the fourth inning. The Angels the scored two ion the fourth and one in the fifth to go up, 3-1. Haase hit Detroit’s second home run of the game in the sixth inning to cut the lead to one, 3-2.

Willi Castro tied the game in seventh inning on a single to right field as Carpenter came in. Los Angeles retook the lead in the bottom of the seventh, 4-3, on a home run. After a scoreless eighth, Carpenter tied the game with his third home run of the year followed by Kreidler’s first career home run for the lead.

Gregory Soto came in and recorded three strikeouts for the save. With back-to-back strikeouts to start the inning, a single and a walk followed to put the tying and go-ahead run on base. Soto then struck out Matt Duffy to end the game for his 25th save of the year.

Detroit used six pitchers in the win as Jose Cisnero earned his first win of the year.

The Tigers are off on Thursday before facing Kansas City in Missouri on Friday.
