DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – It only takes one quarter to change a game and Minnesota changed their fortune in the fourth quarter. Detroit had a 14-point lead head into the fourth quarter when Minnesota scored two touchdowns in eight minutes. The final touchdown came with 45 seconds left as Minnesota took the lead for the first time in the game, 28-24.
Key choices in the fourth quarter is what doomed Detroit in the end. On Detroit’s drive just before Minnesota received the ball on their first score, the Lions went deep on a third-and-one on their own 27-yard line for an incomplete pass. Instead of running the ball, which had been successful for most of the game, Detroit had a 39-yard punt on fourth-and-one as Minnesota was given a short field to work with from the Vikings’ 43-yard line.

What looked like could be the last drive of the game as Detroit slowly moved the ball down the field ended at the Minnesota 30-yard line. This time Detroit went for it on fourth-and-one and was denied on a rush turning the ball over with 3:30 left in the game.
Detroit’s defense came through forcing a three-and-out as 2:36 was left in the game. Detroit took over on the Minnesota 47-yard yard line. All they would have to do was run out the clock for the victory.
Two incomplete passes and a penalty made it third-and-14 with two minutes left in the game from Minnesota 46-yard line. Williams preceded to rush for 10-yards to make it fourth-and-four. The next decision cost Detroit the game as the Lions opted to try a 54-yard field goal that was missed giving Minnesota the ball back with 1:14 left on their own 44-yard line.
Three plays later and just 25 seconds off the clock, Minnesota showed why there were at the top of the division as Kirk Cousins threw for a 28-yard touchdown. Instead of playing for a tie and overtime, Minnesota went for it all and scored the winning touchdown.
Detroit made it to midfield after the kickoff but Jared Goff threw an interception at the five-yard line with 17 seconds left to end the game.

“I frickin regret my decision there at the end. I should have gone for it on fourth down. I told the team that,” head coach Dan Campbell said.
It is a learning curve for the team and leadership as Goff also wishes he would have voiced his opinion to Campbell in the fourth quarter. “I wish I would have gone over there and demanded to stay on the field. We all have our regrets in one way shape or form.”
Overall, Goff did a great job with Detroit’s offense producing 416 yards as 277 yards came in the air. He was 25-of-41 with a touchdown pass. Jamaal Williams had a day with two rushing touchdowns and 87 yards rushing. Williams had touchdown runs of two yards, in the first quarter, and 13-yards in the third quarter to put Detroit up, 24-14.
It was Alex Anzalone that led the defense with 10 total tackles and one sack. Aidan Hutchinson didn’t play due to an injury and the Lions lost cornerback Tracy Walker for the season due to a torn Achilles.
Detroit will host Seattle on October 2 at 1:00 p.m. at Ford Field in their next game.
