YPSILANTI, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – After being arraigned on Monday for two gun charges that happened over the weekend after being pulled over following a traffic stop, EMU transfer men’s basketball star Emoni Bates was released on a personal bond. He is charged with carrying a concealed weapon and altering the identifying marks of a firearm. His court date has been set for October 6 on the charges as he has put in a non-guilty plea.

Magistrate Elisha Fink gave Bates the personal bond because of a clean record. She said, “I don’t have a problem with the personal bond but I disagree that there’s no threat. The nature of these particular charges are inherently dangerous. That’s why we have laws regulating this kind of thing.”

Bates transferred to Eastern Michigan University this summer after a year at Memphis. He was the consensus top high school basketball player in Michigan in 2021 and reclassified a year earlier to go to Memphis. Averaging only 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in his first season, he decided to leave Memphis and head back home to Ypsilanti where he was the star player in high school. He came from Lincoln High School and Ypsilanti Prep Academy.

EMU’s statement on the situation says in an email, “We are aware of a situation involving men’s basketball student-athlete Emoni Bates. Eastern Michigan University takes all allegations of this nature seriously. Per department policy, he has been suspended automatically from practice and playing privileges until the legal process is resolved. Because this is an on-going legal matter, the university will have no further comment at this time.”

At 10:43 p.m. on Sunday night, Bates failed to stop at an intersection and was pulled over. The police located a gun in the car during the investigation and arrested Bates. Bates’ lawyer, Steve Haney, commented and said to ESPN that Bates was not driving his own care when he was pulled over. Haney quoted, “Reserve judgement on this. There’s way more to the story. He borrowed someone’s car, was pulled over and a gun was located in the car.”

Everyone will have to wait until October 6 to see what will happen with Bates. Until that time he will not be with the EMU men’s basketball team, either, due to the suspension from the school.
