Youngkin’s support of Dixon adds an interesting juxtaposition to her opponent, incumbent Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Youngkin defeated Democrat Terry McAuliffe last November. His win is tied, in part, to the endorsement from former President Donald Trump and parents angry with the public schools in their state.

Dixon, who is backed by the DeVos family and former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, is promoting herself as an education choice advocate, and a “conservative mom verses a far-left birthing parent.”

She’s also hit back against Gov. Whitmer’s lockdown of schools. On Monday, Gov. Whitmer spoke to 50 superintendents and “stressed the importance of in-person learning,” according to a press release.

Gov. Whitmer shut down all public schools in Michigan from March 2020 through the end of that school year to flatten the COVID-19 curve for three weeks. She also stopped in-person learning in November to slow the spread.

In a July 12 candidate profile, Dixon told Michigan News Source “We’ve see how [Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s] shutdowns affected kids in school. I’ve walked alongside parents who have said, ‘I’ve seen a change in my child. How do I get them back on track?’ My campaign is working on a plan to have school dollars follow the child and to get the parents involved.”

Michigan’s general election is November 8.
