DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Down 3-1 after the fourth inning, Detroit scored four runs in the next two innings for a 5-3 lead. From that point on they never gave up the lead in the 7-5 win. Jonathan Schoop and Kerry Carpenter produced home runs as Detroit pounded out 15 hits.

Victor Reyes, Tucker Barnhart, and Carpenter all had three hits to lead the team. Reyes and Barnhart both brought in two RBI. Bryan Garcia went six innings for his first win of the year recording five strikeouts. Gregory Soto worked the ninth inning for his 21st save of the year.

Barnhart earned his first RBI in the second inning on a sharp line drive to center field as Carpenter came in. Cleveland took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth only to see the Tigers tie it in the fifth inning. Reyes scored the second run of the game with a single as Barnhart came in and then Willi Castro grounded out as Riley Greene tied the game.

Back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning with one out by Schoop and Carpenter put Detroit back in front for good, 5-3. Cleveland pulled within one run, 5-4, in the seventh but a Barnhart single in the eighth brought in Schoop to make it 6-4. Reyes followed with a single as Carpenter came across the plate for a 7-4 advantage.

Cleveland threatened in the ninth inning scoring a run with one out off of closer Soto but a double play ended the game as Detroit broke their losing streak.

The two teams face each other in game two of the series on Tuesday night at 7:10 p.m.
